popular Modern design components

Modern design has its roots in the machination age of the 1940's and also in German and Scandinavian architecture. Derivatives of this style include Midcentury Modern design and Postmodern design. A guiding factor behind Modern design is that form follows function. In other words, the design of the living space should clearly reflect its useful purpose.

Modern designs share common components with Industrial design in that structural elements are left exposed; structural frames and structural material such as brick and concrete are minimally adorned or left completely exposed.

Modern design emphasizes the use of geometric lines with few natural shapes.

Modern design materials & colors

It is common to see the mixed use of wood and metals, neutral colors and earth tones with either a glossy or matte finish.
